Battery packs for smart meters and IoT terminals

Once a water or gas meter is installed in the field, replacing the battery is hard — and an NB-IoT terminal still has to handle burst transmit current. Long-life design, ultra-low self-discharge and wide temperature are the three requirements.

Requirements

What this application demands of the pack

These are the electrical and mechanical points that matter in this application.

Long-life design

Replacing the battery in an installed meter or sensor node is costly, so long-life design is the priority. Actual life depends on how the device is used, and we assess it together with your energy budget and operating conditions.

Ultra-low self-discharge

Standby current is often in the microamp range, so self-discharge is a significant share of total consumption. Low self-discharge is one of the keys to extending service time.

Wide temperature and pulse current

Outdoor installation means winter-to-summer temperature swings, and NB-IoT and wireless modules draw burst current on transmit — the pack has to support that pulse even at low temperature.

What we need from you

Give us these and while meeting your performance needs we pick the most cost-effective option for you.

ItemWhat to tell us
Terminal type and useSmart water / electricity / gas meter, NB-IoT terminal, tracker, sensor node
Energy budgetStandby current, operating current, transmit pulse current and transmits per day
Target service timeThe replacement interval you are aiming for, used to derive capacity and self-discharge requirements
Installation environmentIndoor or outdoor, buried or inside a meter box, and the ambient temperature range
Size and interfaceBattery compartment dimensions, and whether a solder tab or connector is used
Capacity & dischargeBuilt from 0.1 Ah to 600 Ah to your requirement — common levels such as 10 Ah, 20 Ah, 50 Ah, 100 Ah and 200 Ah are all confirmed per model; continuous and peak rates are matched to the duty cycle
The above describes the general matching logic only. The final selection is made by us — your requirements come first, and we work to reduce your cost as far as safety allows.
FAQ

Questions about iot and smart metering packs

Which form factors are available for smart metering?

Two: cylindrical and pouch. Cylindrical is a mature, consistent structure; pouch has the advantage in irregular spaces and slim meter housings. The choice follows your battery bay.

How long will the battery last?

It depends on your energy budget and the actual operating conditions — standby current, transmit frequency and ambient temperature all affect the result. We use a long-life design (actual life depends on the operating conditions). Provide the energy parameters and we will assess a capacity plan against them.

Can it support NB-IoT transmit at low temperature?

That has to be assessed against your minimum operating temperature and transmit pulse current. Provide both and we will advise on the chemistry direction.

How is certification handled?

We hold 17 certifications and reports including CE, IEC 62133, UL 2054, RoHS and REACH. Mature models come with existing certificates, provided directly; newly customised models are checked item by item against your target market and specifications. New certifications are handled end to end by our team, with testing costs and timelines set out in the proposal for your confirmation before anything starts.
